Brawijaya Students Educate Community on Waste Management

Six students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Brawijaya (FP UB) who are members of the EcoLiving Community organized the EcoAction II activity which aims to provide education and training related to waste management through the participation of housewives and young people. This activity took place at the RW 01 Hall in Rampal Celaket Village, Klojen District, Malang City.

As an extension of the zero waste concept, EcoAction II activities also provide education related to inorganic waste management through the waste bank system and other waste management techniques.

"The concept of zero waste is starting to be echoed by several environmental activists because it is not only able to reduce waste, but also provides benefits in economic and social aspects," said Zulfikar Dabby as chairman of the EcoLiving Community, Wednesday (29/3/2023).

EcoAction II was attended by Kak Dede as the Financial Officer of Urban Nexus and Kak Putri as the representative of Teens Go Green Indonesia. "We should take action for the climate, starting from small things such as processing organic waste into compost or by reducing the use of single-use plastics," said Putri as the mentor of Young Leaders for Climate 2 from Teens Go Green Indonesia.

The implementation of EcoAction II also invited Drs. Totok Sapto Mardjono as the Head of Waste Reduction and Cleanliness Section, Malang City Environmental Agency who became a resource person related to household organic waste management. "The target of the Malang City government is that the landfill will no longer operate in 2030, so that household waste management should not only rely on the landfill anymore but has started with the awareness of each person," said Totok.

Not only that, EcoAction II also involved Bank Sampah Malang to strengthen understanding of the waste management system. This activity also invited Mrs. Efrida Hartini, A.Md and Mr. Yusuf Karyawan who were the resource persons on the topic. "The most important thing is when we want to try, then whatever the waste or garbage is, we can create it into a product that can be sold," said Mrs. Efrida.

The benefits of EcoAction II activities were also felt by Fony, one of the participants in this activity. Fony felt that actually the household waste produced can also be utilized into products that have use and selling value. "What we know is only processing waste into crafts, it turns out that there are so many products that we can process from waste. Even rainwater can be processed into drinking water," said Ms. Fony.

It is hoped that EcoAction II activities can bring fresh air in the application of the zero waste concept in RW 01 Rampal Celaket Village through inorganic waste management through waste banks and organic waste through earthworm cultivation. This series of EcoLiving Community activities under Young Leaders for Climate 2 organized by Teens Go Green Indonesia in collaboration with Plan Indonesia through the Urban Nexus Program and supported by ANCP-DFAT and Plan Australia.
